This joint exhibition, THINGS/DAIKTAI, results from an exchange between the students of CIT Crawford College of Art and Design here in Cork, Ireland and the Kaunas Art Institute of Vilnius Academy of Art in Lithuania. It is an exploration of objects that in each culture is taken for granted... are they viewed the same way?

Aesthetics are inexplicably important to us. We make the effort to decorate even the items that we know will be used only once before being relegated to landfill. Dimples and perforations, seams and seals are all there to enhance performance yet these are frequently disguised as flowers and pattern, delicately printed and chemically perfumed so we can pretend to ourselves that we have a purity above our visceral beings, that we don’t pulse and ooze and flake and smell. While we float increasingly away from our bestiality, our Dorian Grey middens become more grotesquely toxic.
